This weekend in Boston (Saturday, May 7, 2011) a fast-growing oppressed group took to the streets in an organized march. This follows demonstrations that already occurred in Toronto, Vancouver, Orlando, Dallas and Hartford.

The March is part of an international series of protests know as SlutWalks. Some participants have chosen to wear provocative or revealing outfits to bring attention to the cause.

The movement began in Toronto  in response to comments made by Constable Michael Sanguinetti to a group of female students at York University on January 24th, 2011. He said, “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”

Sonya Barnett and Heather Jarvis, the co-founders of the movement, refuse to be slut-shamed. They are tired of being judged by their sexuality and feeling unsafe as a result. Rationalizing inexcusable behaviour creates an environment in which it’s okay to blame the victim. That’s not okay.

Three hotels have begun using towels equipped with washable RFID tags to keep guests from snagging them. Just to keep patrons guessing the hotels have chosen to remain anonymous.
